The idea
Empathy is not agreement. Empathy is presence.
The skill
Use the “Listen, Label, Confirm” loop:
- Listen without preparing your response.
- Label what you think you heard (“It sounds like…”).
- Confirm you got it right.
Micro-practice (2 minutes)
When someone vents, respond with:
- “That sounds frustrating.”
- “I’d feel overwhelmed too.”
- “Do you want advice or just a space to be heard?”
